First I should give you some background. Many years ago (after the dinosaurs; before Yelp reviews) Alan Beatts had an inspired idea to open the best bookstore in the world that catered to lovers of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Armed, literally, with a few boxes of used books and a dicey address in Hayes Valley, his dream was realized.
After an upscale move to Valencia Street and the addition of new books, videos and special editions, Borderlands Books continues to be a rising star while the generic box stores flounder. The bookstore prides itself on excellent service, awesome staff and really cool customers.
Naturally wanting to build on that success, Alan looked around his neighborhood, rented the space next door, and decided that a cafe was needed. The cafe will have excellent service, awesome staff and you will be the cool customers!
The process of taking a space (shudder...that story will come later) and turning it into a legal cafe is not simple. First we emptied the space; no small feat, then the planning began. We perused zoning rules, consulted architects, and hired contractors. We took photos, warned neighbors, and had hearings. All this effort led to the Planning Board and the ultimate goal of Building Permits, which were finally issued on September 1.
Now the real work begins. This web log will keep you up to date on the dramatic changes that occur as the cafe is built. Check in often as the updates will be completely random!
